Measuring career readiness: what institutions should track
Attendance shows engagement, not impact. A simple, evidence-informed way to show what careers provision changes.
Careers teams are under growing pressure to show the value of what they deliver. Yet the measures most often reported, such as attendance figures and satisfaction scores, say little about whether anything actually changed for students. Graduate destinations matter, but they arrive years later and reflect many factors at once. Institutions need something in between.
Measure change, not attendance
The simplest robust approach is to ask the same questions before and after an intervention. A pre- and post-session assessment shows movement in understanding and confidence, attributable to that session, within days rather than years.
What is worth measuring
Readiness for competitive pathways has several distinct parts, and it helps to track them separately. Our assessments cover six:
- Understanding of how competitive careers are accessed in practice
- Clarity on which early decisions shape future options
- Confidence navigating career pathways
- Understanding of what employers look for beyond grades
- Readiness for professional environments
- Confidence approaching next career steps
Keep it short and anonymous
A handful of statements rated on a five-point scale takes students two minutes and produces consistent data across cohorts. Anonymity matters: students answer more honestly when they know responses are reported only in aggregate and never shared individually with staff.
Add students' own words
Numbers show how much changed. A single open prompt, such as "one thing that became clearer for me was…", shows what changed. Together they make a far more persuasive case to senior leaders, governors and parents than either alone.
Use the results to decide what comes next
Good measurement does more than justify past spending. It shows which cohorts benefit most, which themes need more depth, and whether a pilot should become a longer programme. That turns careers provision from a series of one-off events into something that improves year on year.
See how we report impact
Every Bridgepath programme includes a confidence assessment and an institution impact summary. We are happy to share an illustrative example.
